Brownsville Economic Development Council has earned the CompetitiveReady Seal, an endorsement of the area´s overall capacity to support business development. Brownsville is the first CompetitiveReady community to receive the seal. Located at the southern tip of Texas, on the border with Mexico, Brownsville offers access to international trade through the Port of Brownsville. Other advantages that stood out for the auditors included safety, ongoing improvements to the infrastructure, and cooperative leadership that has made Brownsville a leader in business attraction and job growth.

    A recent announcement from the federal government that it will offer for sale more than 21 million acres in leases in the western Gulf of Mexico for oil and gas exploration and production could have profound ramifications for Brownsville.

    That’s according to Eddie Campirano, president and CEO of the Port of Brownsville, who said the proximity of the leases makes the port a likely candidate to service new energy activity in the Gulf.

    “Strength in numbers” is the basic concept behind the push for a Bi-National Economic Development zone encompassing Brownsville and Matamoros, one of the strategic initiatives of United Brownsville and the subject of a May 3 workshop at the University of Texas at Brownsville that brought together several key stakeholders from both sides of the border.

    Brownsville South Padre Island International Airport officials can finally relax — at least until September.

    The Department of Transportation on Friday announced that contract air traffic control towers will continue to receive Federal Aviation Administration funding through the end of the fiscal year.

    On March 22 the FAA announced that Brownsville would be among 149 “contract tower” airports nationwide to lose federal funding for air traffic controllers’ salaries.

    The T-Minus campaign began on Monday, April 15, 2013, the day the Draft Environmental Impact Statement was released, and will end on Tuesday, May 7, 2013, the day of the second and final Public Meeting the Federal Aviation Administration is hosting.
