Brownsville Economic Development Council has earned the CompetitiveReady Seal, an endorsement of the area´s overall capacity to support business development. Brownsville is the first CompetitiveReady community to receive the seal. Located at the southern tip of Texas, on the border with Mexico, Brownsville offers access to international trade through the Port of Brownsville. Other advantages that stood out for the auditors included safety, ongoing improvements to the infrastructure, and cooperative leadership that has made Brownsville a leader in business attraction and job growth.

Higher Education

A skilled and educated population is the foundation for having a responsible, highly developed, and prosperous community. Brownsville continuously strives to raise the standards and improve the quality of its education system. Brownsville ISD was recently awarded the Broad Prize for Urban Education, an annual $1 million award that honors school districts across the U.S. making the greatest progress in raising student achievement. In addition, 80% of all campuses earned Exemplary/Recognized ratings in the state’s 2011 accountability system. BISD high schools have aligned 8 magnet programs to 21st century career forecasts and student interest. BISD is the largest employer in the Rio Grande Valley, with approximately 7,708 employees working for 57 schools serving 49,991 students.

One of the city’s greatest assets is the University of Texas at Brownsville & Texas Southmost College. The university and college attract both local and international students, offering over 130 undergraduate programs for certificate, associate, or bachelor’s degree and 24 graduate programs for master’s and doctorate degrees. According to The Hispanic Outlook in Higher Education, UTB/TSC ranks 6th nationally in the number of associate degrees, 25th in number of bachelor's degrees and 74th in master's degrees awarded to Hispanics. UTB/TSC is also one of the city’s top employers and provides educational resources and training to a growing student population of nearly 18,000 students.
