Brownsville Economic Development Council has earned the CompetitiveReady Seal, an endorsement of the area´s overall capacity to support business development. Brownsville is the first CompetitiveReady community to receive the seal. Located at the southern tip of Texas, on the border with Mexico, Brownsville offers access to international trade through the Port of Brownsville. Other advantages that stood out for the auditors included safety, ongoing improvements to the infrastructure, and cooperative leadership that has made Brownsville a leader in business attraction and job growth.

 Brownsville is home to some of the most technologically advanced health care facilities. Our doctors and nurses are highly experienced and truly committed to providing high quality, cost-effective care. The Brownsville health care community continually raises the bar and is dedicated to saving lives and improving the quality of lives by the persistent development and improvement of the services it provides. Brownsville has two major hospitals, which are among the city’s top employers. There are also other surgical and rehabilitation hospitals and numerous specialty clinics that provide a full range of medical services.

Our two major hospitals, Valley Regional Medical Center and Valley Baptist Medical Center, offer the highest caliber of healthcare facilities and are highly renowned in the medical field. Valley Regional Medical Center has been recognized by HealthGrades for their clinical excellence and high scoring among the nation’s full-service hospitals in 2008 and 2010. In 2007, 2008, and 2009, the Valley Baptist Medical Center-Brownsville was recognized by the American Heart Association with the Triple Crown Award for the treatment of coronary artery disease, heart attack, and stroke. Out of about 1,525 hospitals nation-wide participating in the American Heart Association’s database for stroke care, 757 hospitals participating in the database for coronary artery disease, and 595 hospitals participating for heart failure, Valley Baptist-Brownsville was one out of 35 hospitals nation-wide who received awards in all three categories. In 2009 Valley Baptist-Brownsville was the only hospital in Texas (and one of only 13 in the entire nation) to receive three “gold” awards, which go to hospitals that have an 85% or greater compliance with national guidelines for at least 24 consecutive months for care of coronary artery disease, heart failure, and stroke.
